Independent Indigenous is a poetic and intimate documentary that follows the lives of four indigenous elder women, one from the Guna Yala province in northeast Panama, and three from the Sámi communities in Northern Sweden.

Through their stories, the film explores different meanings of independence and freedom, shaped by their connection to land, heritage, and spirit.

The Guna woman expresses pride in her community’s collective independence, rooted in the traditions and resilience of her people.

In contrast, the Sámi women among them a reindeer herder and a forest shaman reflect deeply on personal independence, telling stories of strength, loss, and survival in a modern world that often overlooks indigenous voices.

Through these four women, Independent Indigenous becomes a sensory journey woven with ancestral wisdom, cultural pride, and the elemental contrasts of fire and water.

Nature plays a central role in the narrative, a mirror of their inner worlds and a vessel for their truths.

The film captures their everyday life, their rituals, and their philosophies, touching on gender roles, family lineage, and culinary traditions as expressions of identity.
