Maloya

Synopsis:

Maloya, the spirit of freedom. Maloya is a mystical music genre inherited from Reunionese slaves as a call for freedom and resistance to oppression illegally played in Reunion Island (a former French colony, current French department) until the 70s'. This documentary by Anaïs Charles-Dominique follows Christine and Olivier, two current internationally recognized maloya singers from the popular areas of Reunion Island struggling to perpetuate through music their Island's memory, traditions and identity in the modern global consumer culture. They write the history of modern Maloya, both faithful to the tradition and future-oriented, still seeking for freedom.
