Levi is hitting his midlife crisis a little early. He's also a former foster child with no sense of future. But in his past is with him always in the form of Joe and Simone, two imaginary childhood friends he knew long ago. Twenty years ago, they were a trio of foster children. They made a pact: to go to San Francisco, where they might find some sanctuary. Joe and Simone made it, but Joe never left. But now, all these years later, Levi is going to fulfill that promise.
But the people Levi discovers are not the same ones he has in his head. Once an angry young straight man, Joe is now a married gay man with a child with a lifetime of failed possibilities. And like Levi, Joe has his demons he's fighting in the ghost of his long dead foster father. And Simone has returned from San Francisco to start her life and rebuild from the ashes of a miserable childhood. Levi has to reconcile his illusions of his friends with their realities and crisscross the country to bring all three of them back together.
