Judith: A Domestic Psychodrama for Screendance and Orchestra

Synopsis:

Judith is the heroine of the Old Testament legend in which an Israelite widow saves her city, Bethulia, by seducing and beheading Holofernes, the general of an invading Assyrian army. In this contemporary reimagining of the legend, the tyrant Judith slays is her own fear; the city she saves is her self. Titled Judith: A Psychodrama for Screendance and Orchestra, Peter Sparling’s danced thriller is set to a hyperdramatic score originally commissioned for the modern dance great and Sparling’s mentor, Martha Graham. In the cinematic tradition of psychological thrillers, the line between reality and fantasy blurs as Eryn Rosenthal plays a wife wandering through her empty house on the eve of relinquishing it to new owners. Memories of her life with her cruel, abusive husband (danced by Sparling) overwhelm her as she collapses to the floor of their bedroom. She relives or imagines a scenario in which she decides to alter the course of her life and conquer her own fears by taking action.
